Places to Visit in Diyarbakır, the Heart of the Southeast
Diyarbakır, the heart of Southeastern Anatolia, bears the traces of ancient cities and offers the most special reflections of our culture with its thousands of years of history. In this unique city, you will find many places that are worth exploring, from mysterious ruins and historical artifacts to stunning architectural structures and fascinating natural landscapes.
To fully enjoy Diyarbakır, which offers an extraordinary wealth of resources for lovers of Eastern mysticism and history enthusiasts, you need a good travel guide. Here's the Diyarbakır travel guide that we have prepared for you:
Diyarbakır Castle and Walls
When you think of Diyarbakır, the first symbols that come to mind are undoubtedly Diyarbakır Castle and its magnificent walls, which rival the Great Wall of China. The Diyarbakır Walls, one of the world's largest defensive walls, are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These walls, 5.5 kilometers long and 10-12 meters high, bear traces of more than 30 civilizations.
The castle has two sections and four main entrances. Upon entering, you will be greeted by the Hevsel Bahçeleri (Hevsel Gardens) with their stunning landscaping and lush greenery. While visiting Diyarbakır Kalesi (Diyarbakır Castle), be sure to also visit the Arkeoloji Müzesi (Archaeological Museum), the Saint George Kilisesi (Church of Saint George), the Cephanelik Binası (Armory Building), the Eski Cezaevi (Old Prison) and the Aslanlı Çeşme (Lion Fountain).
Ulu Camii (Grand Mosque)

Ulu Camii (Grand Mosque), one of the oldest mosques in Anatolia, was built in 639 AD after the conquest of Diyarbakır, when the Mar-Toma Church was converted into a mosque. The mosque's basalt architecture is remarkably robust and reflects the "black stone" character of the city. The mosque's walls are adorned with inscriptions from various civilizations, while its main entrance features symmetrical reliefs depicting a bull and lion fight.
Ulu Camii (Grand Mosque), known as the "5. Harem-i Şerif” (5th Haram al-Sharif) in the Islamic alphabet, comprises structures that are constructed during various historical periods. These structures include two mosques: the Shafi'i and Hanafi sections, the Masudiye and Zinciriye madrasahs, the east-west maqsura, the social complex and the minaret. El-Cezeri (Al-Jazari's) sundial, located within the mosque, is another focal point.
Hilar Caves
The Hilar Caves, protected as a first-degree archaeological and natural site, are a must-see destination. Studies have identified remains dating back to 7500-5500 BC. These caves are among the first sites to bear witness to humanity's transition to communal living.
Archaeological excavations are still ongoing at the Hilar Caves, which bear traces of the critical period leading from nomadic to settled life. This stop offers an unforgettable exploration experience for history buffs.
Meryem Ana Kilisesi (Virgin Mary Church)

Meryem Ana Kilisesi (Virgin Mary Church), dating back to the 3rd century AD, is one of the most impressive pieces of evidence that Diyarbakır has hosted diverse civilizations. This church, belonging to the Orthodox Syriacs and still in use, was used as a temple by the Şemsi people before being converted into a church in 280 AD.
The late Roman-era door and altar, its exquisite woodwork, columns, pulpits and icons are breathtaking. Inside the church are four courtyards, a council chamber and quarters for the clergy. This sacred structure, which has stood for centuries, is not only a place of worship but also a silent witness to Diyarbakır's cultural heritage.
Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı Museum
Poet and author Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı's house, now a museum, is a top destination for visitors to Diyarbakır. This house, one of the most beautiful examples of Diyarbakır houses, was where Tarancı was born and later converted into a museum.
Reflecting the architectural style of the city, the museum displays the poet's belongings, books and letters. Located in the city center, the Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı Museum is divided into three sections: summer, winter and spring. This unique museum is accessible no matter the season.
