WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT TURKISH COFFEE

Turkish coffee is one of the most deeply rooted and distinctive flavors of our culture. While it is loved worldwide, it holds a unique meaning for the Turkish people. For us, coffee is synonymous with friendly conversations, pleasant morning starts and small but meaningful breaks throughout the day. While automatic coffee machines have made it easier to prepare, nothing beats coffee cooked over embers in a copper coffee pot.
There's a centuries-old tradition in every sip of Turkish coffee and a story in every foam. Let's explore the unknown aspects of this special coffee.
Turkish Coffee Discovered in Southern Abyssinia
Originating in the Kaffa region of Southern Abyssinia in the early 14th century, coffee spread to the Ottoman Empire via Yemen and from there to the rest of the world. In 1517, when Özdemir Pasha, Governor of Yemen, brought this unique aroma to İstanbul, the foundations of Turkish coffee culture were laid.
A Tradition That Began with Coffeehouses in İstanbul

The first coffeehouse opened in Tahtakale and quickly became an indispensable meeting place in İstanbul. Books were read, chess was played and conversations took place, making coffee not just a beverage but it became a way of life.
Europe Was Introduced to Coffee Thanks to the Turks
Turkish brewing techniques also influenced Europe. Being the only coffee that is served with its grounds, it distinguishes itself from others. Slowly brewed over coals, Turkish coffee acquires its unmatched aroma and flavor.
The Word "Breakfast" Was Born with What Was Eaten Before Coffee
Coffee holds such a special place in Turkish culture that even the word "breakfast" derives from the meaning "before coffee." Traditionally, it's consumed in the morning or midday, often setting the tone for the day.
The Reason Coffee Is Served with Water

According to legend, if a guest drinks coffee, it means they're full and if they drink water, it means they're hungry. However, the real purpose is to drink water before coffee to cleanse the palate and fully experience the coffee's flavor.
Salted Coffee Tradition
Salted coffee, a staple in marriage proposal ceremonies, once served as a way to send a message to the prospective groom. Sugary coffee would be served for those who were favored and salty coffee for those who weren't. Today, this tradition continues as a sweet humorous element.
The Foam Retains Its Warmth for a Long Time
Turkish coffee, prepared with one of the world's oldest brewing methods, stays hot for a long time thanks to its foam. Serving it in thin-rimmed cups also prolongs the pleasure.
Turkish Delight with Coffee is a Sweet Sign
In the past, offering Turkish Delight with coffee was a sign of the host's appreciation for their guest. If the guest ate the Turkish Delight, it signaled their satisfaction; if not, it signaled their displeasure. Today, this treat has become a sweet symbol of Turkish hospitality.
