May 19: The Day a Nation Opened Its Heart to Hope

The milestone of an unprecedented struggle for existence: May 19, 1919. Celebrated with joy and ceremonies, this day marks when a nation, declaring "Independence or Death!", fought with all its strength for its homeland. On this day, the course of history changed forever. Hope became a tangible reality on the horizon of Samsun. Let’s take a closer look at this pivotal day that laid the foundation of a nation rising from its ashes.
The First Light in the Darkness
By May 1919, the First World War had ended, and the Armistice of Mudros had been signed months earlier. The lands of Anatolia, homeland of the Turks, were under occupation from multiple fronts. The Ottoman Empire was exhausted, and the people were worn down after years of war. The sky seemed cloaked in black clouds, and many believed liberation to be an impossible dream. Debates about foreign mandates spread everywhere, and policies of surrender had begun to take root.
Amidst this pitch darkness, a resolute will rose, believing wholeheartedly in the independence of the homeland. May 19 erupted like a volcano in this climate of despair. The world witnessed that the Turkish nation would never bow to oppression. This was a day of awakening the first light of a nation that would rise from its ashes.
The Bandırma Steamer and Landing in Samsun: A Strategic Move

On May 16, the Bandırma Steamer set sail from Istanbul carrying officers burning with love for their homeland and the dreams of a nation’s independence. On the morning of May 19, the first step on Samsun’s shores marked a carefully calculated and highly strategic move.
Mustafa Kemal saw in the eyes of the people of Samsun their love for the homeland and their sense of sacrifice. His belief that the ideal of a great Turkey would be realized was strengthened at that very moment. The national struggle had officially begun!
The landing in Samsun became a symbol of local resistance uniting into a single fist. Regional efforts for liberation were connected to a national center, and the spark of independence was ignited on the shores of the Black Sea.
From Captivity to Freedom: A Revolution of the Mind
The landing in Samsun was more than a military operation; Mustafa Kemal and his comrades ignited the spark of a mental revolution. It was now clear that the old authorities and the Istanbul government could not adequately fight for the independence of the homeland. Surrounded by the British, Italians, Greeks, and others, it was the nation itself that would rescue its lands: "The independence of the nation will be saved by the determination and will of the nation." The chains of captivity were broken in the minds of the people.
A desire for freedom and independence, coupled with love for the homeland, empowered the nation to determine its own destiny. In this way, May 19 marks the awakening of a people and the first sprout of national sovereignty. The ideal of full independence took shape on that day.
The Assurance of the Future: Youth
Laying the foundations of the Republic and liberating an occupied homeland was no easy task. From the young to the elderly, everyone gave their all. The great Republic of Turkey, the product of such a sacred and selfless struggle, was entrusted by Atatürk to the youth to remain everlasting. Atatürk trusted that the young, educated with a modern mindset, would protect the Republic from all dangers and ensure its longevity.
For Atatürk, youth transcended mere age, as reflected in his words: “In my understanding, the youth are those who adopt the ideas and ideology of this revolution and carry them to future generations. In my view, a twenty-year-old fanatic is an old man, while a seventy-year-old idealist is a young person full of vitality.” The transformation of May 19 into the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day stems from this belief.
What began as “Gazi Day” in 1926 gradually became a celebration for all youth. Thanks to the efforts of the Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club and the suggestion of Ahmet Fetgeri Bey, the day took on its festive character. For Atatürk, sports meant a strong body, an agile mind, and a virtuous character. The youth, as bearers of the Republic’s values, represent the future. This day is one of the most precious symbols of Atatürk’s trust in youth and the legacy he entrusted to them.
Looking Toward Tomorrow with the Unyielding Spirit of May 19

Today, celebrating May 19 is much more than attending ceremonies. It is about keeping alive the spirit Atatürk emphasized in his Address to the Youth and enriching that excitement with scientific, cultural, and sporting achievements of our time. With the addition of "Commemoration of Atatürk" in 1981, the holiday’s depth increased, merging gratitude for the leader of the national struggle with the vitality of youth.
Generations rising from the heart of the nation will carry this legacy forever, preserving the Republic. The spirit of May 19 will continue to illuminate our path, like a sun that rises anew every year.
