After the conquest of Istanbul, the two fortresses were not used as strategic points but were used for different purposes. For a while, the prison became a prison for the Janissaries, and in the 16th century, it became a neighbourhood in which soldiers and families settled around. It was then used for transit controls and taxes in the Bosphorus. During the Republican period was taken under protection for tourism purposes. Anadolu Hisarı was very important in Ottoman history.
