The interior of the castle was built by Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha during the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s and the walls were built by İlyas Ağa between 1826 and 1827. Since such a castle is mentioned in Evliya Çelebi's Travelogue, it is also thought that the castle was built on an older structure.
