Establishment of the Van Museum

The city of Van was an important settlement center in history as it had a rich nature in terms of animal husbandry, fishing, and agriculture. Excavations revealed historical artifacts bearing the traces of many cultures in the city. In order to preserve the works, the works were first moved to a storage building in 1932. The Van Museum Office, which was opened in 1945 with the increase in the number of works, started to serve as the Van Museum Directorate in 1972. The museum building was renovated after the damage it sustained in the earthquakes that occurred in 2011 and opened its doors to visitors in 2019 with its new building. Built on a very large area, Van Museum offers its visitors an unforgettable museum experience.

Interesting Historical Artifacts in the Van Museum

With its distinguished collection, Van Museum manages to surprise its visitors while piquing their curiosity. Various artifacts from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Urartian, Persian, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Turkish-Islamic and Ottoman periods are exhibited in the museum. These interesting works answer your questions about the civilizations that lived in the region. Especially since Van was used as the capital during the Urartian period, it is seen that many artifacts belonging to the Urartians are included in the museum. Bracelets, armbands, and earrings from this period show the activities of the Urartians in that period. Cuneiform beads from the Urartian period also give clues about the jewels of the period, as they are gifts for the deceased. Personal belongings and gifts that are found in the graves of the deceased indicate the belief in the afterlife during the Urartian period. The votive plaques of the Urartians are among the most important works of the museum. You can get information about the religious beliefs of the Urartians when you examine the votive plaques and cuneiform beads in the museum.
