Like in every culture, Turkish culture also has many marriage traditions. For the couples desiring to get married, a very exciting journey begins upon the decision of marriage. In this journey, the tradition of bride bundle is a tiny but important detail.
History of this tradition goes back a long way. Actually, it is thought that this tradition was started to lighten the burden on the shoulders of soon-to-wed couples to some extent. According to Turkish traditions, family of the groom-to-be prepares a bundle for the bride-to-be and vice versa. The prepared bundle contains gifts for the bride-to-be and groom-to-be, as well as their family members. After the bundles are prepared, they are exchanged by the families on a planned date. Along with meeting the needs of couples, the tradition of bride bundle is thought to start to give families an opportunity to get close with each other.
Starting date of bride bundle tradition is not known exactly; however, it is a known fact that it remained unchanged since the beginning. The only change to this tradition is the gifts inside the bundles. In old times, the bride bundles involved hand-knitted pieces and clothes while today people put clothes and products of luxurious brands in these bundles. There are even some companies which prepare your bundle according to your budget and desired brands to make things easier for you.
In line with the bride bundle tradition, families wishing to prepare bundles on their own start a shopping process during which mutual connections will be strengthened. During this process, brides-to-be and mothers-in-law go shopping together. This way, brides-to-be do shopping to their taste and mothers-in-law find the chance to learn their taste. After shopping together, mothers-in-law add details such as towels, ornaments, etc. in the bundle. The final step is decorating the bundle. Gifts and the decoration of the bundle by mothers-in-law is a surprise for brides-to-be until the day they receive it. Details such as the time and manner of giving the bundle may vary from region to region. However, there are some fixed items according to the tradition of bride bundle. Bridal nightgown, bridal slippers, make-up set, bathrobe, pajamas and perfume set are among these fixed items. In addition, other items inside the bundle may include towel, home booties, a pair of clothes, etc.
Even though the bride bundle used to be delivered in another bundle in the past, today it is rather delivered in containers such as chest or luggage. The main reason is that brides-to-be and grooms-to-be can use the chest or luggage afterwards; in other words, it is more useful for the couple. Regardless of in what the bundle is delivered, the tradition of decorating the bundle still continues. The chest or luggage to be delivered instead of a bundle is properly decorated and handed over to brides-to-be on the planned day. Thanks to this heartwarming tradition, the families not only cement their relationships but also contribute to the soon-to-wed couple by meeting the bride’s needs.
