SUMMER DISEASES AND HOW TO PROTECT AGAINST THEM

Yaz Aylarında Hastalık

In summer we spend most of our time somewhere cool outdoors due to the high temperatures. Summer also brings changes to our dietary habits and sleep patterns etc. Due to all these, our bodies become susceptible to certain illnesses, especially in summer. Foremost among these are sunstroke, food poisoning and insect bites. Before we look at how to protect yourself against summer diseases, let’s take a closer look at what these diseases are. Here are some summer diseases that may threaten your health...

Headache

Baş ağrısı

Although headaches are a health problem that can occur in all seasons, the high temperatures and humidity levels of the summer season make it a more common occurrence. Occurring due to high temperatures and humidity in summer, headaches can get even worse with prolonged exposure to heat.

Insect and fly bites

Insect and fly bites are another nuisance associated with hot summer days. Bee stings, tick and mosquito bites are the most common insect bites. Insect bites can lead to various infections. In such cases, the affected area must first be washed with soap and water.

Sunstroke

Sunstroke, which usually occurs in children, can also occur in adults who are over-exposed to the summer heat. It manifests itself through symptoms like severe headaches, vomiting, nausea and high fever. In case of a sunstroke, the affected person should be taken to a cool place and a cold shower would also help. Medical assistance should be sought if the fever does not go down.

Infections

Enfeksiyonlar

Places like swimming pools and seas we cannot keep away from during summer may not always be fully hygienic. Pools particularly are an ideal breeding ground for microbes and bacteria. In case of an infection, symptoms like high fever, nausea, vomiting and headache may occur. You should definitely see a doctor if you think you are suffering from an infection.

Food poisoning

Another summer malaise is food poisoning. Some food products tend to spoil rapidly in summer and so produce bacteria. Similarly, food not prepared under hygienic conditions can also lead to food poisoning. You should immediately seek medical attention if you have symptoms like fever, vomiting, nausea and diarrhea, which may mean food poisoning. Ignoring it may even lead to fatalities.

Skin diseases

In summer, sunburn, skin rashes and fungal infections can also occur frequently. All thanks to the harmful effects of over-exposure to the sun. Especially those with a fair skin are more vulnerable to skin diseases. If the skin is not sufficiently protected in summer, undesirable conditions such as skin spots and premature aging can occur.

How to protect against summer diseases

As we mentioned, letting our personal care standards slip in summer may cause some serious illnesses. For this reason, those who wish to spend a healthy summer should make a point of adopting healthy lifestyles. But, how can we protect ourselves against summer diseases? Here are some tips to keep you healthy in summer:

  • To prevent complaints such as headaches, refrain from over-exposure to the sun during the summer months and avoid drinks containing caffeine.
  • Use insect and fly repellent sprays before going out to avoid infection by insect bites.
  • To prevent sunstroke, make sure to wear protective cream, hats and glasses. Drink plenty of fluid, and stay hydrated at all times.
  • Choose clean spaces for swimming. Women should especially change after swimming and put on dry clothes.
  • Street food should be avoided to prevent food poisoning. Avoid consuming a product if you are not sure how it has been cooked.
  • For a healthy skin, wear a sun cream and moisturize your skin with products suitable for your skin type.
