BARIŞ MANÇO MUSEUM GUIDE

barış manço müzesi

The Moda neighborhood in Kadıköy is closely associated with Barış Manço. Because Barış Manço’s house in Moda, where he lived and made his albums, was converted into a museum by Manço’s family on June 9, 2010. Barış Manço’s remark that “a person is then truly dead when people no longer talk about him” greatly attests to the significance of the museum. Barış Manço was an eminent artist, a voyager, a man of the people and a kind-hearted person... Opened through the joint efforts of the Kadıköy Municipality, Manço’s family and many other organizations, this museum offers visitors an insight into his unique personal characteristics as well as his artistic side. With the museum, Barış Manço, an important public figure, earns himself a permanent place in the hearts of people and his memories are kept alive. If you are also interested in the Barış Manço Museum, this article will show you the way.

An overview of the Barış Manço Museum

The history of the house where Barış Manço spent his life, goes way back. Mr. Dawson commissioned Pape Kalfa to build the house between the years 1895-1900. The house changed hands a few times in the 1930s after Dawson returned to his country. It was purchased by John Whittall in 1965 and named as the Whittall Mansion. Barış Manço purchased the mansion from the Whittall family in 1984 and had it renovated. It is a 19th century Victorian house. The singer passed away in this house in 1999. Inspired by Barış Manço’s remark that “a person is then truly dead when people no longer talk about him”, the Manço family turned the house into a museum with the support of the Kadıköy Municipality and Türkiye Halk Bankası.

What does the museum contain?

The Barış Manço Museum houses many different sections. It has three floors and a basement. There is a dressing room, a dining room and a lounge in the entrance. The entrance also displays the Steinway B2010 piano, which Barış Manço described as his “biggest dream”. And right next to it stands a masterfully carved statue of the artist. This floor houses awards, a glass ware collection, various historical artifacts, and important wooden items. The next floor includes the childhood rooms of the artist’s children, Doğukan and Batıkan Manço. This floor also contains equipment used in the children’s entertainment program “Adam Olacak Çocuk” presented by Barış Manço and the program tape records. The lower floor has a Knight’s Room, artefacts and items from the period and the painting equipment used by the artist who was bestowed knighthood by the Belgian Royal Family. Barış Manço’s car is located at the entrance to the museum. The house has two gardens; one for summer and one for winter days. It is one of the must-see museums in Istanbul.
