A FLAVOR AXIS FOR GASTRONOMY ENTHUSIASTS: FOOD & BEVERAGE GUIDE FOR ADANA, HATAY AND GAZIANTEP CUISINES

Each region of Turkey has its unique cuisine. In every city you go, you will definitely find a dish you will go crazy about. Moreover, Turkey is also home to a flavor axis which are in interaction with one another and yet uniquely distinct. Yes! We mean the axis of Adana, Hatay and Gaziantep! For instance, you can have a delicious kebab in Hatay but you will get the most delicious ones in Adana. Similarly, you can have delicious baklavas in Adana but you will get the most tasty ones in Gaziantep. But do not assume for a moment that a city gives up on a flavor because it originates from elsewhere; on the contrary, over the years, these cities have developed new flavors adding a new layer of taste and fun to dishes. And here is the flavor axis of Adana, Hatay and Gaziantep offering a spectrum of delicacies from meat dishes to desserts which you will never regret tasting.

What to eat in Adana

Adana brings to mind a large spectrum of food and beverage options. The Adana cuisine incorporates hot, sour and sweet delights. So, what can you eat in Adana? Indeed, the first thing that comes to mind when one mentions Adana is its kebabs; we recommend you to especially go for those sold by street vendors with lots of spices added into them. In Adana, people have liver for breakfast. So, if you have arrived in Adana in early morning, you can start your day with a liver dish. If you are in Adana on a warm summer evening, you can have a go at “bici bici”, a kind of dessert made from starch, powdered sugar and sherbet. Fellah meatballs prepared using bulghur and semolina is a popular food cooked by housewives which you should definitely try. If it is late at night and you are on your way back from a night-out, then you should definitely taste the Sirdan Dolma (a meat dish made from the stomach of lamb). And do not forget about those kibbeh balls! Be sure to drink turnip juice with actual turnip pieces in them. And do not miss out on rolled pastries with potatoes and cheese. There are also many street vendors and venues selling delicious Turkish churros.

What to eat in Hatay

Hatay’da ne yenir?

Another city that is literally a heaven for food enthusiasts is Hatay. Its cuisine appeals both to the palate and the eye with meat dishes, sherbet, desserts and many more. So, what can you eat in Hatay? The first thing that comes to mind when one says Hatay is, of course, its delicious kanafeh. You should definitely make a point of tasting this unique dessert if you ever go to Hatay. Also don’t fail to try hot Hatay “meze” appetizers that you will have a lot to choose from, which taste just great. You can consider paying a visit to venues such as the “Hatay Uzun Çarşı” where authentic breakfast venues are located. The kebab shops are also worth a try. Kibbeh balls, dry cottage cheese, İskenderun doner kebab served with a special sauce, şişperek soup, peppered bread, and “paper” kebab prepared in baking paper are among other specialties from the Hatay cuisine you should try.
